Motivated by the recent revived interest and extensions of values studies (Hitlin & Piliavin, 2004; Inglehart & Welzel, 2005; Esmer & Pettersson, 2007; Minkov, 2007; Kulich, in press), this study reports the initial efforts toward developing a master list of value-laden Chinese proverbs and sayings that are derived from Schwartz's (1994) 45 near-universal values and 15 key emic values identified in respondents' saying preferences. In line with providing another method for assessing values (e.g. Schwartz et al., 2001), this master list, when refined, will offer an alternative perspective to view "Chinese values" and help substantiate the value-exploring process in intercultural training.
